We have found over the last 20+ years, one of the greatest attractions of Glomel is the peace & quiet, along with the friendliness of its local people. This part of Brittany is unspoilt by avoiding the large number of tourists so it keeps its old world rural charm & fascination.
Glomel village is less than 1/2 mile from the house, where you can meet the locals in the café/bar or in the Pizzeria. There is also a very good mini-market with a cash point available when the shop is open. The Post Office is situated in the Town Hall.
There is a Doctor's surgery nearby and a Pharmacy in the village centre.
The local lake is less than 10 minutes easy walk, with its various water sport activities and young children's play area; it is also a haven for wild life. Angling is available in the local lake and the Nantes-Brest canal, which has superb towpaths suitable for cycling & rambling.
Further afield is the town of ROSTRENEN (5 miles) with a larger shopping area, 3 supermarkets and a Tuesday market.
All the coasts of Brittany are equidistant from Glomel, less than one hour easy drive.
Brittany has a number of lakes, the largest being Lac de Guerladen which is near to Glomel. Here you will find many activities such as pedalos, boats for hire & boat trips.
Brittany has something for everyone. It is historic, artistic, has stunning coasts and beaches and unspoilt countryside. There is an abundance of activities that can be found in the region, be it lazing on the beach in the mid-August heat or trekking and cycling in the cooler months.
The north, south and west coasts of Brittany are equidistant from Glomel, less than one hours easy travelling by car - but not all the beaches are at the coast! Several of the lakes have man-made beaches, e.g. Lac Guerleden, Priziac and Lac du Korong (Glomel) There are many 'Grandes Randonees', footpaths which lead you along some of the prettiest routes. There are also lovely walks along the wild cliffs, characteristic of most of the Brittany coast or estuaries, similar to Cornwall, with which there is a cultural as well as geological affinity. Try for example, the walk to Le Pouldu along the Laita. Several of the beaches at the coast have supervised and enclosed play areas (there is usually a small cost) These include swings, slides and trampolines etc. Play areas are to be found at most of the local lakes in addition to the coast. BENODET has a wonderful safe beach, ideal for children.
The Vielles Charrues the is one of the largest music festivals in europe and can boast many world famous headline acts including Lenny Kravitz, Bob Dylan, Sting, Madness, ZZ Top to name a few! Glomel also hosts the International Clarinet Festival. In addition, there are numerous smaller festivals celebrating the life and history of Brittany. Of course brittany has also been host to the world famous Tour de France!
The history of Brittany is as old as the history of europe. It boasts wonderful fairytale-esque castles and medieval towns as well as pre-historic locations very similar to Stonehenge. Brittany is also famous for it's atrisitic heritage, especially the artists' mecca of Pont-Aven (once home to Paul Gauguin amongst others) .
